Perhaps the chief reason for its formation lies in the tremendous expansion of the suburban buildings in the Port Credit area in the 1950. At the time the only masonic lodge in the area was Mississauga Lodge # 524. This lodge at the time was conferring approximately four times as many candidates annually as was done some 10 years earlier.
Because of the volume of Mississauga Lodge membership, It was also founded at the time that potential members were reluctant to join freemasonry and be affiliated with a lodge with a large membership of approximately 300 but were more inclined to be associated with the new large of smaller membership that offered a better opportunity to become eternally affiliated to enjoy Masonic fellowship.
Early in 1952 the members of Mississauga Lodge felt that the time was right for a new lodge and that this would serve the purpose of relieving Mississauga Lodge of some of the pressure of the number of emergency meetings they were holding at the time. The new lodge, South Gate Lodge, provided an opportunity for its members to receive better masonic experience and enabled them to progress as officers more systematically.
The DDGM at the time was G. B. Jackson of Toronto District A. (Toronto Districts ABCD). It’s first meeting held on January 6, 1953 with V.W Bro. S. H. Appleby, as WM
