In the mid-1970s, Mississauga had developed exponentially, and River Park Lodge #356 G.R.C., was the sole tenant of the Streetsville Masonic Temple. At an Installation there, V. W. Bro. Ernie Morrison, Past Master of King Hiram Lodge #566, Wor. Bro.Doug Kelman of King Hiram Lodge #566 and V. Wor. Bro.Len Taylor of Bedford Lodge #638 and a number of other brethren realized that an additional lodge made a lot of sense, fiscally and fraternally. A large number of Masons lived in the booming city, and a new lodge would accommodate many who found travelling into Toronto a burden. Work was started towards receiving a Warrant. After much work and many trips to Grand Lodge, that Warrant was approved.
The Grand Master, M.W.Bro. N. Richard Richards directed the D.D.G.M. Rt. Wor. Bro. Burns Anderson to deliver the Prayer of Dispensation to form a Craft Lodge. The new Lodge was Designated The Westgate Lodge, U.D. The Charter for West Gate Lodge #734 G.R.C. was instituted at a meeting in the Streetsville Masonic Temple on March 26, 1980.
The name of the Lodge was chosen for two reasons:
- It was the most westerly lodge in Toronto District #1
- There was already an East Gate, a South Gate and a North Gate Lodge in the Jurisdiction.
